As my thesis advisor, Dana Longcope provided guidance with a light but deft touch that encouraged professional self-direction while keeping me on the general course. Of equal importance was Loren Acton, who admitted me to the nascent Solar Physics Group at MSU and supervised my early research, and who always has been willing to share his sound viewpoint on matters professional, scientiic, or otherwise.
